After auditing dozens of Reno-Tahoe small business websites, I see the same mistakes over and over. The good news is most of them are fixable — and fixing even a few can meaningfully improve your rankings.
1. No Google Business Profile optimization
The most common issue. Businesses claim their profile but leave fields empty, never post, and don't respond to reviews. A fully optimized GBP is the highest-ROI activity in local SEO.
2. Missing or duplicate title tags
Every page needs a unique title tag that includes your primary keyword and location. "Home" or "Services" as title tags tells Google nothing useful.
3. No mobile optimization
Over 60% of local searches happen on mobile. If your site is slow or hard to use on a phone, you're losing both customers and rankings.
4. Thin content on service pages
A page with three sentences about your service doesn't rank. Service pages need 500-1,500 words of genuinely helpful, keyword-optimized content.
5. Inconsistent NAP information
Your business name, address, and phone number must be identical across your website, GBP, and every directory listing. Inconsistencies confuse Google.
6. No local content
Generic content that could apply to any business in any city doesn't help you rank locally. Create content specific to Reno, Sparks, Tahoe, and the areas you serve.
7. Ignoring image optimization
Large, uncompressed images destroy page speed. Compress images, add descriptive alt text, and use proper dimensions.
8. No schema markup
Schema helps Google understand your business. At minimum, implement LocalBusiness schema with your NAP, hours, and geo coordinates.
9. Not tracking results
You can't improve what you don't measure. Install Google Analytics and Search Console, and check them monthly.
10. Expecting instant results
SEO takes 3-6 months to show meaningful results. Businesses that quit after two months never see the compounding returns that make SEO so valuable.
